Can you believe that? I was minding my own business when all the sudden there was a whack across my face. I stumbled backwards before I caught myself and glared at Melody.

“What was that for?” I demanded.

“I heard what you said to that photographer. About how you think that I’m easy! For your information Neil and I haven’t even gone all the way yet.”

“Well, I’m sure it’s not because you haven’t tried. Maybe my brother has more brains than I give him credit for. And what are you doing here? I thought my mom told you unless one of your parent’s came you couldn’t be in the house.”

“I was just saying bye to Neil. You better watch your back Landau. No one likes you at school anyway. It wouldn’t be hard to find a few girls to kick your butt.”

“Why don’t you do it Tinker since you think you’re so tough. Bring it!” I took a threatening step forward but just then a car horn blew.

“You better be happy my parents are here otherwise I’d take you up on your offer.”

“Whatever!” I made the clucking chicken sound as she turned and raced out the door. “Cow,” I muttered as I rubbed at my stinging face. That crap hurt. And where, you might ask, was my brother while all of this was going down?

He is such an IDIOT! I slapped the bottles out of his hand and he scowled as he bent to pick them up.

“What’s your deal Val?”

“You keepĀ  your stupid girlfriend away from.”

“She’s not my girlfriend.”

“Why’s she always around the house then?”

“Cause she wants to be my girlfriend. I tried telling her that things weren’t that serious between us but she just brushed it off.”

“Well, you’re not helping by going on dates with her now are you?”

He shrugged as he put the water bottles back in the fridge. “She’s fun to hang around…plus she’s a great kisser.”

“Ugh, shut up! You’re going to make me hurl!”

He laughed then reached over and tugged on my ponytail. “You look nice Val.” He studied me than scowled. “Are you dating some guy that I don’t know about? Cause if you are I’m going to-”

“Shut up Neil! No, I’m not dating anyone. We can’t all be Casanovas like you.”

He smirked. “You got that right. Anyways, I’m going to go work out for a bit.”

“It’s hot outside!”

“I think I know what my body can take Val. Catch ya later!”

Gai came racing into the house about an hour later. It was her bedtime but she liked to say goodnight to the fish.

“Where’s mom? Where’s dad?”

“Mom had to work late and dad’s in bed asleep. What’s up squirt?”

“Neil…I think…I think he’s dead!” Her lower lip trembled and her eyes filled with tears. My heart stopped as I reached over and gripped her shoulders.

“What do you mean you think he’s dead?”

“Well, he was working on the new exercise bike that mom brought when he hopped off it. He stood there for a minute before he shook his head, took a single step and then he hit the ground…dead!!!”

Gail started to bawl and I rolled my eyes. I’m not an I told you so but…didn’t I tell him? Didn’t I tell him that it was too freakin’ hot outside to be working out? Nooo, no one listens to me. After calming Gai told I told her what she had to do.

“Yeah Neil! You’re not dead!” Gai said as she jumped up in the air. Neil shook the water out of his face.

“Wh-what happened?”

“You were exercising and then the next thing I know you were on the ground! I thought you were dead but Val said it was probably a heat stroke. And she said if you were dead at least she wouldn’t have to worry about having Melody stinking Tinker as a sister-in-law.”
